The Porsche 911 Turbo
2006 saw Porsche bring out the new 911 Turbo this is the sixth generation off the 911 model and boy did they release a cat among the pigeons this was said to be the top of the range performance sports car in the 911 range and they were absolutely bang on the mark with that! On the 28th of February 2006 it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show and from 25th June 2006 it was available in German Porsche dealerships.
The turbo 911 which is also known as the 997 made a few improvements on its previous models it was producing 480 BHP at the 6,000rpm mark and with the 3.6litre engine the torque was about 620 NM and the maximum torque was available from 1950 and 5000 rpm basically what this all means is that it bloody quick in fact it goes like stink!! The Porsche 911 comes with a six speed box and all it needs is 3.9 seconds of your time to get you to 62mph that is to say the least incredible. The 911 Turbo coupé will reach 120 mph in 12.8 sec. Even though th3 911 can get to all milestones in phenomenally quick times they are still managing to keep to a pretty good miles per gallon in fact its round the 20 mark to be honest and for a high performance sports car I would be happy at 15 miles per gallon!!
There are many people out there who find the standard 911 turbo just not quick enough so Porsche have decided to introduce the Tiptronic S automatic system basically it means that you can get from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and to 120 mph in just 12.2 seconds. This makes a very desirable Porsche a whole lot more desirable. Both the Manual and the Tiptronic can reach a maximum speed of around 190 mph now that is what I call some performance!
The 911 Turbo has under gone some changes it had the all wheel drive system redesigned and now comes with a digitally controlled clutch that is multi disk this is going to make the power transfer from the engine to the road a lot smoother and quicker which can only increase the driving performance. Depending on the conditions of the road the on board computer will produce the maximum torque distribution to ensure that each individual wheel is doing the best job it can at keeping you on the black stuff. The 911 turbo comes with 'PTM' which stands for Porsche Traction Management this means that it will give you the best possibly grip in any road condition whether it be rain snow ice a windy country lane or at high speeds on the motorway.
There is an old saying that has definitely rung true in many cases and the Porsche 911 Turbo is no different, and that is if you want to go quicker you need more powerful brakes! The 911 comes with six pot calliper disc brakes at the front of the car and at the rear it has only four pots this combined with the ventilated and perforated which all I can say are massive but not that Porsche have used ceramic brake pads which saves around 17 kilograms in conventional brake pads but also lessens the chances of getting brake fade at high speed or when you are always in the need of hitting the brakes. So the engine makes the 911 Turbo go like the clappers and its braking system makes it stop like its hit a brick wall perfect!
The 911 Turbo has had a few major bodywork changes one of which is from behind the car its going to look a lot fatter and that's because they have made it 22mm wider than its predecessors. The Porsche team have tried to find a more efficient way of getting cold outside air to the inter-coolers and the way they have done that is by redesigning the air intakes behind the doors.
